The F4F Wildcat was a carrier-based fighter used extensively by the US Navy and Marine Corps during the early years of the Second World War. It featured a radial engine, folding wings on later variants and six .50-calibre machine guns, and was valued for its rugged construction and ability to absorb battle damage.
