The Spitfire Mk V entered RAF service in 1941 as an interim single-seat fighter developed to counter improved German aircraft. It combined the Spitfire’s established airframe with the more powerful Merlin 45 engine and was produced in several wing and tropicalised variants for air defence, interception and fighter-bomber duties. It was gradually superseded by later Spitfire marks but remained in wartime service with Britain and numerous Allied air forces.
