The P-51 Mustang entered US Army Air Forces service in 1942 as a single-seat fighter, later becoming especially effective as a long-range escort after receiving the Rolls-Royce Merlin engine. It also served in ground-attack and reconnaissance roles. The type was retired from US military service in 1957, although surviving examples remain active as warbirds and racing aircraft.
