The Lockheed U-2 entered US service in 1956 as a single-seat, high-altitude intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance aircraft. Designed to operate above the reach of most contemporary fighters and surface-to-air missiles, it carries optical, electronic and signals-intelligence sensors over very long distances. Modern U-2S aircraft remain in active US Air Force service, although their retirement has been repeatedly proposed.
