The MiG-25 Foxbat entered Soviet service in 1970 as a twin-engine interceptor, high-altitude reconnaissance aircraft and reconnaissance-bomber. Built largely from welded stainless steel, it was designed to intercept fast, high-flying targets and could exceed Mach 2.8 in operational use. Its enormous radar, powerful engines and exceptional altitude performance came at the expense of range and manoeuvrability. The MiG-25 has now been withdrawn from operational service.
