The F-5 Freedom Fighter was an American lightweight supersonic fighter developed by Northrop as an affordable and easily maintainable aircraft for export and US allies. Designed primarily for air defence and ground attack, it combined a compact airframe with twin engines, high manoeuvrability and relatively low operating costs. It entered service in 1964 and remains in service with several air forces today.
