The A-1 Skyraider entered US Navy service in 1946 as a single-seat, carrier-based attack aircraft. It was used for close air support, strike, rescue escort and electronic-warfare missions, carrying a heavy weapons load over long distances despite being piston-engined. The type was retired from US service in 1973, while South Vietnam operated it until 1975.
