The Harrier entered Royal Air Force service in 1969 as a subsonic strike aircraft capable of short or vertical take-off and landing. Later versions served in ground-attack, reconnaissance and carrier-based multirole roles. The UK retired its Harriers in 2010, while AV-8B Harrier IIs remain operational with the Italian and Spanish navies following the type’s 2026 withdrawal from US Marine Corps service.
