The P-39 Airacobra was an American single-engine fighter developed by Bell Aircraft Corporation. Designed for air-to-air combat, it featured a mid-mounted engine behind the cockpit driving a nose-mounted propeller through an extension shaft, allowing the main armament to be mounted in the nose. It entered US Army Air Forces service in 1941 and was widely operated by the Soviet Union during the Second World War.
