The A-10 Thunderbolt II entered US Air Force service in 1977 as a dedicated close-air-support aircraft. Built around the GAU-8/A 30 mm cannon, it was designed to attack armoured vehicles and support ground forces from low altitude while absorbing significant battle damage. It remains in active US Air Force service, although retirement is planned as the fleet is gradually reduced.
