The A-10 Thunderbolt II, often called the “Warthog”, was developed in the early 1970s by Fairchild Republic to provide dedicated close air support (CAS) for U.S. ground forces. It was designed to survive heavy ground fire, with features like a titanium “bathtub” cockpit to protect the pilot, redundant flight systems, and the ability to fly with significant damage.
The A-10 has proven its effectiveness in numerous conflicts, including Grenada, Panama, the Gulf War, Iraq, Afghanistan, and operations against ISIS, often earning praise from soldiers on the ground. Despite periodic proposals for retirement, it remains in service due to its unique capabilities, and the fleet is being upgraded with A-10C modifications, including modern avionics, precision-guided munitions, and improved targeting systems.
