The F6F Hellcat was an American single-engine carrier-based fighter developed by Grumman for the US Navy. Designed for air combat and fleet defence, it featured a rugged airframe, six .50-calibre machine guns and a Pratt & Whitney R-2800 radial engine. It entered US Navy service in 1943 and remained in American service until 1954.
