The Republic F-105 Thunderchief, nicknamed the “Thud”, was a U.S. Air Force supersonic fighter-bomber introduced in the late 1950s. Designed to deliver nuclear weapons at high speed and low altitude, it became heavily used in the Vietnam War for conventional bombing missions. Despite high losses in combat, it delivered the majority of strike missions over North Vietnam in the early years, earning a reputation as a rugged but overtasked aircraft. It was eventually replaced in frontline service by the F-4 Phantom II.
