The Supermarine Spitfire Mk IX was a British single-seat fighter developed from the Spitfire Mk V to counter the German Focke-Wulf Fw 190 and improved Bf 109 variants. Powered by the Rolls-Royce Merlin 61 or later Merlin 70 series engines, it was produced in several configurations for different operational roles. It entered RAF service in 1942 and remained in British service after the Second World War.
