The Harrier is a British family of ground-attack aircraft developed by Hawker Siddeley with a vectored-thrust propulsion system. Designed to operate from short or unprepared airstrips, it can perform short take-offs and vertical landings by directing engine thrust downward. The first production Harrier entered service in 1969 and the family was operated by several countries in both land-based and carrier-based roles.
