The F-4 Phantom II entered US Navy service in 1961 as a twin-engine, two-seat fighter designed for fleet air defence, before evolving into a multirole aircraft used for interception, strike, reconnaissance and suppression of enemy air defences. Renowned for its speed, payload and versatility, it served extensively with the United States and numerous export operators. Although retired by most major air forces, upgraded Phantoms remain in limited military service with several countries.
