The Dassault Mirage III entered French Air Force service in 1961 as a single-engine, supersonic interceptor designed for air defence. Built around a tailless delta wing and powered by the SNECMA Atar turbojet, it could exceed Mach 2 and was later developed into reconnaissance, strike and multirole variants. The Mirage III was widely exported and remained in service with some operators into the 21st century.
