The MiG-29 Fulcrum entered Soviet service in 1983 as a twin-engine, lightweight air-superiority fighter designed to counter Western aircraft such as the F-16 and F/A-18. It features a high thrust-to-weight ratio, excellent manoeuvrability and a powerful infrared search and track system, while later variants gained improved avionics, range and multirole capability. The MiG-29 remains in service with Russia and numerous export operators, although many air forces are replacing it with newer fighters.
