The MiG-17 entered Soviet Air Force service in 1952 as an improved, swept-wing development of the MiG-15. It was designed as a high-speed interceptor and fighter and became known for its excellent dogfighting capabilities. The aircraft served widely in Eastern Europe, Asia, and Africa under Soviet control, remaining in frontline service until the early 1970s, after which it was used for training and secondary roles. Valued for its maneuverability and robust design, the MiG-17 also became influential as an export aircraft to allied nations.
