The F/A-18 Hornet entered US Navy service in 1983 as a twin-engine, carrier-based multirole fighter designed to replace several earlier aircraft types. It combines digital fly-by-wire controls, excellent low-speed handling and a balanced air-to-air and air-to-ground capability, making it well suited to carrier operations. Although replaced by the Super Hornet in US Navy frontline service, the legacy Hornet remains operational with the US Marine Corps and numerous international operators.
