The F-5 Freedom Fighter entered US Air Force service in 1964 as a lightweight, supersonic fighter designed for affordability, simplicity and ease of maintenance. Developed into the improved F-5E Tiger II, it performed air-defence, ground-attack and advanced training roles while being widely exported to allied nations. Although retired from frontline US combat service, the F-5 remains operational with numerous air forces worldwide.
