The F-105 Thunderchief entered US Air Force service in 1958 as a supersonic fighter-bomber designed to deliver conventional and nuclear weapons at high speed and low altitude. Powered by a single Pratt & Whitney J75 turbojet, it was one of the largest single-seat, single-engine combat aircraft ever built and could carry a greater bomb load than many contemporary medium bombers. The F-105 served extensively during the Vietnam War before being retired from US Air Force service in the 1980s.
