The A-10 Thunderbolt II entered US Air Force service in 1977 as a dedicated close air support and battlefield interdiction aircraft. Designed around the GAU-8/A 30 mm cannon, it combines exceptional low-speed handling, pilot protection and the ability to carry a wide range of guided and unguided weapons. The A-10 remains in active US Air Force service, although the fleet is being progressively retired as missions transition to newer aircraft.
