The MiG-21 “Fishbed” entered Soviet Air Force service in the late 1950s as a lightweight, supersonic interceptor and fighter, becoming one of the most widely produced jet aircraft in history. Known for its high speed, agility, and simplicity, it formed the backbone of Soviet tactical air power during the Cold War. The MiG-21 served in numerous roles including air defense, interception, and limited ground-attack, and while eventually replaced by more advanced fighters, it remained in Soviet use for decades and was heavily exported to allied nations.
