The Handley Page Herald was one of Britain’s foremost post-war airliners and saw operations with more than 110 operators during a 40-year career. Although production only reached 50 aircraft, due in no small part by the company’s reluctance to abandon piston engines in favour of the turbine Dart which saw it lose out to the Fokker Friendship, it made its mark on every continent and in many disparate roles.
This comprehensive study recounts the full history of the Herald in exhaustive detail with new, previously unpublished information and data, drawn mainly from primary sources. Chapters cover the development of the HPR3 and HPR7 versions; civil and military operators; flying the Herald from the viewpoints of both the flight crew and passengers; unbuilt variants and projects (of which there were many); and production and service statistics. Appendices include in-depth aircraft histories; notes on accidents and significant incidents; listings of preserved aircraft and artefacts; and the Herald’s appearances on film and TV. Finally, there is a bibliography and an extensive index.
Softback, 144 pages, over 240 photographs, line drawings and ephemera, most in colour
