The Su-33 Flanker-D entered Russian Navy service in 1994 as a carrier-based air-superiority fighter derived from the Su-27. It was designed for operations from aircraft carriers, featuring strengthened landing gear, folding wings, canards and modified aerodynamics for ski-jump take-offs and arrested landings. The Su-33 remains in limited service with the Russian Naval Aviation but is gradually being supplemented by newer carrier aircraft.
