Iran received its first F-86 Sabres in the mid-1950s, as part of U.S. military aid to strengthen the Imperial Iranian Air Force (IIAF). Operated mainly in the fighter and training roles, the Sabre helped modernize Iran’s air arm and provided valuable jet combat experience during the early Cold War. Although quickly overshadowed by more advanced fighters like the F-5 and F-4 Phantom II, the Sabre served as an important stepping stone in Iran’s transition to modern jet operations before being phased out by the late 1960s.
